Political production breakdowns.

Recently GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry got-got at an editorial meeting flubbing up how many court justices there are and mispronouncing Sonia Sotomayor's name. The clips have been spread throughout the media like the rest of Perry's mental glitches that have been crippling his campaign this year.

This is not the first time we have seen a GOP Candidate loose their minds in a recorded editorial interview. As recently as last month the Herman Cain Libya flub raised the same questions about the legitimacy of his now suspended campaign.

What exactly is happening at these meetings that make politicians loose their marbles? Might it be that these are exhausted human being rather than characters on TV that both the media and political campaigns make politicians out to be? Or do these people simply have no idea what the hell they are talking about?

Perry has reportedly dropped the ball in almost every form possible. He forgot what government  agency's he wanted to cut in a debate, looked crazy drunk at a speech and now the editorial meeting are just a hand full of examples. It's hard to make the case that this man is prepared to run for president let alone run the country.

Herman never made much of a case for himself either. It seemed that his answer to every problem was his, now infamous, 999 plan. No one could get a straight answer out of him about nearly anything else especially foreign policy. Wether he had a plan or not we may never know because his campaign never seemed to be ready to talk about it.

In today's non-stop coverage of these political campaigns it is hard to get an idea of who these candidates really are. Many American's are experiencing the race via TV or through video clips online. The entire GOP presidential race and politics in general, have become a heavily scripted and highly calculated production. When these productions go down hill it becomes major news.

This political production feeds not only the news media but nearly every facit of entertainment in general. It's almost like politics have become the newest reality show creating mellow dramas within mellow dramas. Instead of talking about the issues and the platforms politician's stand on major news organisations and the American public are obsessed with sound bites, mistakes, outrageous out of context quotations and embarrassing moments.

Not to say that this is anything new, ever since the existence of radio polotics have become a show of sorts, with it's writers, producers and publicist. However in this rich media landscape it seems that the show never stops and no one get's any slack.

Not to say that this production is not interesting. It makes people that would have never thought about politics before stare at it through lime tinted glasses. For many political news comes from satire and comedy.

The real question is can we really except our politicians to answer questions on foreign policy, the supreme court or economics when the voting public not only think that these subjects are boring but have little interest in hearing or talking about them. As much as high minded political junkies would like more people to watch long form speeches, read transcripts of interviews and watch CSPAN more than CNN that is not going to happen.

Being informed is a hell of a lot more work than being entertained, some simply don't have the time and other's simply don't have the drive.

You only need one good pair of jeans.

Denim Jeans are an icon to American comfort. Everyone has them, even if they don’t like to wear them a lot, everyone still has a pair of jeans. I don’t even wear jeans that much but I have at least 10 pairs sitting in my closet. I happen to only wear two pairs, one way more than the other. That’s what jeans should be all about, you have one pair, that you fit right and you never wash them … well sometimes.

What to buy.

Knowing how to shop for jeans is the key to finding the last pair that you may ever buy. It's not just about finding something that will fit you, which is important but not always paramount.
The most important thing to remember is that you want to buy raw denim or selvage denim if you can. The Levi’s shrink to fit 501’s are the least expensive choice at $40. Raw denim jeans are stiff as a board when you first buy them. You will have to soak them before you wear them. You can find raw jeans all over the 501’s are just the classic and least expensive.

Raw denim is important because it has not been messed around with. It is straight off the presses denim, little to no treatment whatsoever. The whole fun of having a good pair of jeans is that you make them your own.

You get a square where you wallet goes in your back pocket. You knee wear fits exactly where you knee is. You upper hip “whiskers” are there because you have sat down in those jeans so many times.

Wear them till people can’t stand the smell.

When should you wash your jeans? After much research and experimentation I have found the answer. When people around you start to notice the smell coming from your jeans.

it’s time to wash them.

It’s ok to get dirt on your jeans that’s kinda the whole point. If you don’t have to worry about getting your pants dirty, you should not be wearing jeans. Get paint on your jeans, fall down and make holes in your jeans, write on your jeans if you want. They are your jeans, do what you want with them.

“washing them”

When you first get a pair of raw denim jeans, run a hot bath, turn the jeans inside out, let them soak in it for about an hour to loosen them up, then let them dry overnight. Put them on and wear them till you hear “hey, you smell terrible, I think you need to wash those pants”

When you hear that, do not, I repeat, do not throw them in the machine. If you wash them like you would a pair of regular pants, your going to mess everything up. You have to be gentile you don’t want to wash the fabric to much. You just want to get the grime off of them.

Once again, draw a hot bath for you jeans, and turn them inside out. This time go ahead and put a little color safe detergent in there. Agitate your jeans a little bit and then let the jeans sit for an hour, let dry over night and you ready to go.

If you take care of your jeans, they will be the only pair you ever have to wear. You might want to get some different shades but, really, who cares. They are jeans, wear them out.

Why Apple is dominating the tablet market.

I eventually plan on getting a tablet in the distant future. The technology is an interesting new way of computing that I would like to harness and add to my workflow of devices. Not only can tablets be content sponges that are incredibly powerfull they can also create and manipulate content on the go.

So the first thought here is, of course, iPad. It's the gold standard. It's thin, it's fast, it has 2 camera's but that's not all. There is also the machine of apple behind it. This makes it almost a must buy in the market of the tablet.

The only other two tablets that I would even think about are the Motorola Xoom and the Galaxy S 10. These two deivces have bigger screens, better desktop environments and google behind them. They still fall short.

There are two major reasons

The Apple App Store.

When you buy an iOS device, your buying the App Store, plain and simple fact. Other app stores, such as the Android market, and the Windows 7 market don't stand up. This mainly because it is simply easier for developers to create content for the devices. When you create a program for iOS you create it for a standard numer of devices, in a sterilized sand box. Although this can create a fence to inovation, it does so in another standardized way. These standards that apple requires of it's developers can help them create products more quickly and draw more power from the hardware.

Other markets are more like the wild west rather than the white room of apple. Developers have  a lot to deal with.

  •  Multiple devices with a myriad of screen sizes and resolutions.
  • Different button orientations.
  • Subtly different operating systems.
  • Well over 10 different hardware set ups.
Programing for a specific breed of android can make it easier but the market is not an integrated one and therefore is hard to create a developing community around.

The Apple device family.

If you buy apple, your introducing your self to a closed box. Your devices will all work with each other fairly seamlessly. Your phone will talk to your tablet. Your computer will sync with your tablet, anything your have that has an apple on it will open up new opportunities for your tablet, your phone, your computer and your tv, to talk to each other.

Attempts by other hardware companies have succeeded in doing this to a certain extent. Sony, Microsoft' and Google are in the data portability market but they have not become a market. The fragmentation between devices is a huge barrier of entry into their tablet options.

The inovation in the tablet computing world will grow into something that is almost unimaginable at this point. Apple does have it's caveats and annoyances. It's iOS platform can use some major updates, like it's notification and tablet "desktop" environment. Consumers are no doubt going to where the apps, and the ese of use and customer support are going to go. Thus will the market.

Media Manic and the age of the anti-blogger

I started this blog because I really need to start writing again, about anything really. The problem is trying to figure out what it is that I want to spill out onto this screen here in front of me. It's not like I don't have enough to talk about, or that I am not up on the latest news, or don't have time to sit down and bang them out. My problem is that by the time I am ready to sit down and write something about a subject I feel that I have been beaten to it or it has already become irrelevant. Or I have trouble organizing my thoughts into a work that makes sense.

For instance I was recently in austin visting friends and trying to do SXSW with no badge (worked out perfectly) by the time I got back to The Burg I was so exhausted that the last thing I wanted to do was write some completely unorganized post about how I ran around, drank free beer, and saw and insane amount of good music that I have never herd of. I feel my coverage of my trip on twitter and Tumblr was sufficient enough to anyone that really cared.

I'm starting to realize that there was no real reason for me not to write the post. Even if there are thousands of posts already out there about the same thing. The simple exorcize of me writing it would have been good for me, and an interesting thing for my readers.

I'm started to realize tough that this manic media consumption that I am living is really hindering me as a write and producer of content. I sometimes forget that not a lot of people are as insane about news feeds, twitter, and general blog trolling as I am. Just because I saw 10 articles on the same subject does not mean that my readers have. I'm coming to the conciliation that I am not taking into account who my readers are at the moment or who I really want them to be.

Years ago when I was in high-school I kept a blog that I posted on obsessively. It was more of a journal of things I did day to day than really opinion pieces and what not. It was a lot easier to sit down and to write about what was going on in my life rather than to do research, and organise my posts into somewhat journalistically sound pieces of work. Time have changed tough. I feel if people really want to know what I am doing, where I am, who I'm hanging out with and see the pictures I take, they already are. A blog is not really the place for them to find it.

So what should I be writing about? Do I data mine, and if so should I just spit out the info I find or put my own spin on it? Do I write opinion pieces with quotes form other articles and well research subjects. It's hard to figure out what to do. The bottom line is I need to stop worrying about how I am going to write or what I am going to write and just sit down and blast out some work. If it sucks I don't always have to publish it.

Sprint, T-Mobile Merger.

T-Mobile will be merging it's 3G network with AT&T if it can get through the FCC. T-Moible's  lack of capital and need to upgrade it's network could not back up it's low cost plans and decided to sell in a 25 billion dollar deal. This comes as no surprise in the early stages of 4G networks. Soon 3G will be a much lesser option in a new wireless world that will be pushing HD Video and Cloud based systems. In 5 years it's not going to be enough.

AT&T needed to do something with their network as well. With the increasingly large number of data users the AT&T network has become boged down. Expanding this network with a purchase of another 3G network is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Most in the wireless industry were expecting a merger of T-Mobile and Sprint. This I knew would not work. The companies run on on two different wireless networks T-Mobile on 3G and Sprint on CDMA/LTE. This is a huge deal because the carriers networks would not meld together into one like AT&Ts 3G network would.

One thing for sure is that the 3G network will be a more widespread and more reliable network. It will also be largely in the hands of AT&T which is not a good feeling to have. The merger of the two 3G networks will create a stronger network for consumers and push the technology further. One thing that could get scary is AT&Ts continuing grasp on data boundaries.

First I must say that I have been a AT&T wireless customer for along time, it's the only wireless provider I have been with. Second I have sold phones by all four providers and can say first hand T-Mobile has excellent people working for them on their service side. I can not say that for AT&T.

As I stated in a earlier post this can mean bad things for unlimited data plans. T-Mobile offered one of the lowest priced data plans customers could get their hands on. The problem was that their service is niter reliable or widespread. If your in an area that has good T-Mobile service then it is a fantastic alternative to other, more expensive providers. With this merger sprint will soon be the only provider of unlimited data plans  in the 4G compliant spectrum.

It's going to be very interesting to see how this plays out and if the FCC will even allow it to happen. The FCC has stated that the wireless communication market does lack competitiveness for the first time in several years.

It seems the future of wireless will not be unlimited

Verizon stated that their unlimited data plan that new iPhone 4 users enjoyed, is only temporary. Verizon CFO Fran Shammo stated that tiered data plans, much like AT&T's, will be implemented this summer. This is bad news for users who enjoy the freedom of unlimited data. Although the tiered data plans will be cheaper, it will limit users to 2 Gigs a month. WIth more and more people getting smart-phones the unlimited data plan will soon be a thing of the past.

AT&T users like my self who started with an unlimited plan, can grandfather their Unlimited plan when they upgrade their phone, any changes made to a plan will result in never being able to go back to unlimited. It is assumed that the Verizon Unlimited plan will work the same way.

Some were hoping that since Verizon was offering unlimited data that AT&T would have to go back to theirs eventually to keep up with demand. It seems that this will not be the case. The days of the unlimited plan are numbered. By summertime the only companies offering Unlimited will be Spint and T-mobile, most likely due to their low user base.

The iPhone creates a lot of data usage because it is the most popular handset in the country. and it's users enjoy sucking data through it, or do they?

When I looked at my data plan I saw that the highest I have ever sucked down has been 741 MB, well below the highest $25 2 Gig plan that AT&T offers. I consider my self a heavy data user. I upload photos all the time, listen to NPR streams constantly, watch youtube videos all the time, and email steady throughout the day. When I really thought about it tough I realized that I use WiFi a lot when I am doing a lot of these things.

I bought the iPone 4 in early Feb, and since then my data has went up about 200 MBs.

So do I really need an unlimited data plan? With the new iPhone 4's HD Video capabilities I feel like that I might. I have not really done so but I expect in the future that I will be downloading/uploading HD video more. I also have been useing video chat over 3G more, thanks to Skype and Fring, which uses up a lot of bandwidth (at least I think it does). Never the less my unlimted data plan is $30 a month and the 2 Gig plan is $25 dollars, so I don't really think it is worth it for me to change just yet.

One thing that worries me is, with more and more technology coming through the pipe, is sooner or later 2 Gigs will not be enough, and I think this will be very soon. However on the other side, WiFi is becoming more and more ubiquitous around us allowing users to take a break from their 3G/4G/LTE data plans and use as much as their hearts desire.

Users should be aware of is that the switch from 3G to 4G(or LTE), especially on AT&T may never be unlimited. With the lightning fast speeds of these networks, it will become a lot easier to go over the limit. I hope that this will not be the case, or that the caps will be well above 5 - 10 Gigs, but nothing is certain.

I do encourage you all to go check you data usage and see how much bandwidth you are using and see if you should switch to the tiered package. You can do so by going to your wireless provider's website and logging in to you account much like you would play your bill.  I am very interested in seeing how much data people use every moth so if you would be so kind to report on it in the comments I would really appreciate it.

How I made the header image without a scanner

I made the header image using nothing but a pad a pen my iPhone and photoshop. Here is how I did it.

1. First I drew The logo with a simple pen and paper.

2. Then I took a well lit picture of the drawing with my iPhone (any other phone with a decent camera will work)

3. Then I uploaded it to my Dorpbox and opened it in PhotoShop. It does not matter how you get the image to your computer from your phone, that is just how I did it.

4. Next I adjusted the curves (Image > adjustments > Curves ) to blow out the background to all white and make the black stand out.

5. Next I took all the color out of the image with the black and white adjustment (image > adjustments > black and white )

5. To make the black stand out more I went to adjusted the brightness and contrast. I took the brightness all the way down and the contrast all the way up. (image > adjustment > brightness and contrast )

 6. after that I just resized the image to a width of 800 pixels and uploaded it to blogger

Thats it.

If you don't have photoshop a lot of other image processing software has similor adjustments that you can do. Photoshop Elements should have all these tools. The most helpful in this is the curves adjustment but all you really have to do is isolate the black and get rid of the background somehow.

And that 's how I made the header without a scanner in just a few minuets.

Hello World

Hello, if you don't already know who I am, my name is Joe Castagna. I have been meaning to start a new blog for a while now and have finally found the time to set one up. I hope to start posting here regularly on a wide range of subjects like media, tech, music, politics, local happenings, how tos or whatever else I feel like writing at the time.

everything is brand new here so I am sure there will be a lot of changes to the layout and what not over the next couple of weeks. I am mainly trying to focas on the writing here and not the backend as much. We will see how that works out tough.

above is a picture of my desk were all the work will be done on here. At least most of it, l'm sure I will make some mobile posts here an there along the way.

If you want to find out more check out my links abroad on the sidebar -> or email me - JoeCastagna[a]gmail.com
